UPC

The Universal Product Code is an all numeric symbol adopted by the food industry in 1973. The system was developed by the food industry to give every product a unique code number. It is utilized as a "License Plate" number for individual items. It is most commonly used in a retail environment.

Code 128

Code 128 was selected by the retail industry as a standard code for marking shipping cartons. It has double-density numerics, each bar character represents two characters. It is self-checking with bi-directional start and stop patterns, making it resistant to scanning errors.

Code 39 (3 of 9)

Code 39 is the most widely used alphanumeric symbology. It is not of a fixed length so considerable information can be stored. It is self-checking, provides a high level of data security and is bi-directional, which means it can be read from left to right or from right to left.

Interleaved 2 of 5

Interleaved 2 of 5 uses only digits. It is a variable-length continuous code which is highly compressed. It is used primarily for the automotive industry, warehouse inventory handling, photofinishing envelopes, airline ticketing and baggage & cargo handling. It is the standard symbology for outer shipping containers.

Codabar

A bar code format which is numeric (plus $ - : / . + ). Since Codabar is variable in length, discrete and self-checking, it is viewed as a versatile symbology. It is used in libraries, the medical industry and on photofinishing envelopes.

Pars

Pre Arrival Review System (PARS) are affixed to the A8A document used for importing goods into Canada. They contain a 4-digit carrier code (assigned by the CCRA), the word PARS (optional) and a 6 or 8-digit consecutive number assigned by the manufacturer of the goods for shipment tracking.
